Two very different towns, half an hour apart, both within easy reach of Gosswood.
Wells
England's smallest city, and one of its prettiest. The cathedral is the real event — the scissor arches and the mediaeval astronomical clock are worth the trip alone. Afterwards, walk around the Bishop's Palace gardens and watch the mute swans on the moat, who have been trained for generations to ring a bell when they want feeding.
Glastonbury
Quite a different energy. Climb the Tor first thing for the view over the Somerset Levels (it's a stiff 15 minutes up, but short), then drop into the town for whatever weirdness is on offer that day — crystal shops, abbey ruins, a good handful of cafés.
Getting back
The drive back to Gosswood takes about 30 minutes either way. Eat dinner out, or pick up something from the farm shops on the way home and cook on the firepit.
